Why this matters
Saidal and Boehringer Ingelheim signed a cooperation agreement on 8 June 2026 to manufacture in Algeria an innovative treatment for rare, advanced fibrotic lung diseases. Production will take place at Saidal's El Harrach unit in Algiers, and the deal includes transfer of knowledge and expertise. Saidal Director General Mourad Belkhelfa and Derek O'Leary, Boehringer's head for India, the Middle East and Africa, signed in the presence of the Industry Minister and the German ambassador. The product was not named, and neither were volumes, value or a start date.
Algerian officials described it as the first local manufacturing of an innovative rare-disease medicine. Domestic production already covers about 82% of national medicine needs, so the policy focus has moved to high-value products that are still imported. At the Pharma 2026 conference on 1 October, the minister also referred to breast cancer treatments and biosimilars when he spoke about the partnership. Our reading is that the scope may widen, although no further signed agreement with Saidal has been published.
