Our analysis
Why this matters
Groupe Saidal, Algeria's national pharmaceutical group, has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with AbbVie covering technology and know-how transfer, clinical research and advanced programmes including cell therapy. In parallel, a US delegation visited Saidal's Constantine plant on 13 May 2026 to discuss expanding cooperation with Abbott on vaccine production. Saidal already manufactures more than two million doses a year of Abbott's Influvac influenza vaccine at the site.
For Algeria, which uses import restrictions and local-production requirements to build its pharmaceutical industry, US originators are a new source of technology. Saidal's partnership list in 2026 now includes Roche (localization, logged in this tracker) as well as Abbott and AbbVie.
