Our analysis
Why this matters
Kazakhstan's government has approved an investment agreement with AltINFARM LLP for a KZT 58.5 billion plant in the Park of Innovative Technologies special economic zone in Almaty. The plant is to produce 54 medicines, 35 of them classed as socially significant, including immunobiological products, oncology drugs and diabetes medicines. The foreign partners are three Chinese companies: Sinopharm, Sinovac and Kangtai Biological Technology.
It is the largest of four localization projects approved on the same day, which together total KZT 173 billion and about 675 jobs. With three Chinese vaccine and biologics makers involved, it is also the clearest sign of China's growing role in Central Asian pharmaceutical manufacturing — a shift from exporting finished products to the region to producing inside it.
