Our analysis

Why this matters

The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) has signed sublicences with 11 generic manufacturers to make baloxavir marboxil, Roche's single-dose influenza antiviral, under the voluntary licence Roche granted MPP in May 2026. The licence covers 129 countries, subject to local regulatory approval.

The list is notable for who is on it. Alongside four global generics players, MPP chose seven regional manufacturers — in Nigeria, Uganda, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Ukraine and Brazil — explicitly to build regional supply for pandemic preparedness. For several of them, this is their first sublicence for a modern antiviral and a step up in technical capability.
