Our analysis
Why this matters
Ocugen has granted Roots Pharmaceutical, working with its strategic partner Al-Dhow International Holding, exclusive Middle East and North Africa rights to OCU400, a modifier gene therapy for retinitis pigmentosa (RP) that is in Phase 3. The headline economics are up to US$259 million in payments plus a 22% royalty on Roots' net sales.
Inherited retinal diseases are more common in populations with high rates of consanguineous marriage, which makes MENA a meaningful market for a gene-agnostic RP therapy rather than an afterthought. The royalty rate is unusually high for a regional license and reflects the economics of a potential one-time treatment: the licensee's margin comes from pricing and patient finding, not from manufacturing.
