Our analysis

Why this matters

MSD (Merck & Co.) has signed royalty-free voluntary licensing agreements with seven generic manufacturers for alimatravir (MK-8527), an investigational once-monthly oral pill for HIV prevention now in Phase 3. Three of the seven are African — Aspen Pharmacare (South Africa), Quality Chemical Industries (Uganda) and Universal Corporation (Kenya) — alongside Aurobindo, Cipla, Emcure and Viatris. The licences cover 129 countries.

Two things are unusual. The licences were signed before the trials finished, so generic supply can be ready at approval rather than years later; and almost half of the licensees are African manufacturers, which makes this one of the most significant HIV technology transfers to the continent's own industry. For Sub-Saharan Africa, where most new HIV infections occur, local supply of a monthly prevention pill would change both access and the economics of PrEP programmes.
