Our analysis
Why this matters
Kilitch Drugs (India) Limited has agreed to sell its entire shareholding in Kilitch Estro Biotech PLC, its Ethiopian subsidiary, to HarmeeCare Pharmaceuticals, an Ethiopian state-owned enterprise, for US$14 million. Completion is expected by 31 January 2027.
This is the reverse of the usual African localization story. Instead of a foreign manufacturer building or buying into a local plant, a mid-sized Indian generics company is handing its Ethiopian operation to the state. For Ethiopia, which has made local pharmaceutical manufacturing a policy priority to cut its import bill, the deal brings an operating facility and an existing public-tender supplier under national ownership. For Indian exporters, it shows how hard it is for a small foreign player to run an African plant profitably alongside a capital-hungry home expansion.
