Our analysis
Why this matters
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is providing a loan of up to €20 million to Samarkand England Eco-Medical (SEEM) and its sister company Bayan Medical, two Uzbek pharmaceutical manufacturers. According to the EBRD, about 75% of Uzbekistan's medical goods are imported.
The products are not glamorous, and that is the point: IV fluids, antibiotics, syrups and ampoules are the high-volume essentials that hospitals cannot run out of. Development-bank debt into private local producers of these products is the most direct way to raise Uzbekistan's self-sufficiency in the medicines it uses most.
