Our analysis

Why this matters

The African Development Bank Group has approved a loan of up to US$15 million to Biovac, the Cape Town-based vaccine company, toward a new multi-vaccine manufacturing facility due to be completed by 2028. The AfDB joins a consortium of development finance institutions led by the International Finance Corporation.

Africa makes only a small fraction of the vaccines it uses, and the African Union's goal is to make most of them locally by 2040. Biovac's plan — up to 500 million doses a year, starting with oral cholera vaccine and adding inactivated polio, pneumococcal and meningitis vaccines — is one of the few projects on the continent with both technology partners and a financing stack in place.
