Why this matters

Aspen Pharmacare has agreed to sell the European commercialisation rights and related intellectual property for Ovestin, its women's health product, to Ennogen Healthcare International for €197 million (US$220 million). Ennogen will also buy related inventory valued at about €4 million. Aspen will keep manufacturing and supplying Ovestin's active pharmaceutical ingredient and cream formulation in Europe under long-term supply agreements of at least 10 years, provide strategic support services for five years at €1 million a month, and offer transitional services for up to three years.

In Aspen's 2026 financial year, Ovestin generated revenue of about R756 million and profit after tax of R238 million. Aspen frames the sale as unlocking value from assets outside its core focus on emerging markets; proceeds fall under its capital allocation strategy, with share buybacks its preferred way of returning capital.
