Why this matters
South Korea's Bukwang Pharmaceutical has signed a technology export and exclusive supply agreement with NASAQ, a Riyadh-based company, for Dexid tablets in Saudi Arabia. Dexid is an improved drug Bukwang developed in-house for diabetic polyneuropathy. NASAQ will handle regulatory approval, marketing and distribution; Bukwang will support the approval and supply finished product. The minimum purchase commitment is KRW 3.7 billion (about US$2.66 million) over five years, with projected supply of about KRW 6.3 billion (about US$4.53 million). The initial term is five years, renewing automatically in two-year increments.
The agreement is built in two phases: finished-product supply first, then a staged technology transfer for local production during the contract period. Bukwang describes it as its first technology export of an in-house drug in 21 years, since its hepatitis B drug Levovir in 2005.
