Optimizing Retail Pricing: Beyond the Fixed Equation
EPT Research · 25 Jun 2026
Based on best practices that have prevented numerous pricing pitfalls, here's a more strategic approach built on three key retail price assumptions :
Assumption 1: Competitive Positioning
Start by analyzing competitors' average retail prices and align them with your brand positioning. Are you premium, mid-tier, or economy? Your price must reflect this positioning while remaining competitive within your category.
Assumption 2: End-User Price Index
Consider how much end-users actually spend on your product category. For example, if your brand focuses on nappy rash cream, research reports on average parental spending on baby healthcare, including the diaper category. Calculate the fair value of annual spending in your category to determine an ideal consumer price point. This customer value-based perspective ensures your price aligns with actual purchasing behavior.
Assumption 3: Cost of Selling
Factor in all costs: retail margins, penetration costs, logistics, marketing, and overhead. Your price must cover these expenses while delivering a healthy net profit. This cost-based foundation protects your bottom line.
The Optimal Solution
You now have three different price points. My recommendation: Calculate the average of these three prices to arrive at an optimum retail price that balances competitiveness, customer value, and profitability.
This balanced approach prevents the common traps of pricing in isolation and sets your brand up for sustainable market success.
